Android 1.6 Apps2SD+SSHD
Update: Something seems to have gone horribly wrong with the first image. Give this one a try instead. A few people have confirmed that it works. It's a slightly smaller repack of the same image - I reduced the size by removing a few of the apps I'd crammed in to /system/app, so you'll have to install Facebook and Google Sky yourself now. ;)
Well, Rogers/LG is being brutally slow releasing the 1.6 update. There is already a Korean update for the KH5200 that mostly works on the GW620, so I spent some time today making it run as smooth as possible. I currently have an image that is working well, but you have to manually config the APN after installing or there’s no 3G connectivity.
The image is as done as it’s going to get tonight. Don't get it here! Make sure to read the Known issues while it’s downloading – there are some things you need to do to make the image work properly.
The status so far:
- Running well on 1.6
- 3G works after manual APN setup
- Rooted with SuperUser APK
- Bash/nano/busybox/terminfo available
- Made the required mods to the initrd to enable tolemaC’s Apps2SD method
- tolesetup works
- Cleaned up most of the cruft from the Korean image (e.g. Maple Story, Seoul Subway map, etc)
- Added upgraded Google maps + Google Nav to the system.img so it doesn’t take valuable userdata space
- Added a bunch of apps and utilities to the remaining free space on the system.img. It’s now packed to the brim with goodness.
- Set the init.rd to mount the /system partition as read/write. No more “adb remount” to make changes
- Included the excellent TagLauncher home screen. It’s free, and it rocks!
- SSHD out of the box! Now you can ssh to your phone. Login as with “gw620” for the username and password. You can change the user/pass by editing the /system/bin/rundropbear file.
- Lots of other little things
ToDo:
- Get the APN auto-configured
- See if I can remove the obnoxious password from the “Enable Root” menu
Known Issues:
- Google Goggles crashes after taking a pic
- First boots in Korean. You need to hit “next” at the bottom, and then select English.
- Will definitely require a wipe of userdata or factory reset before installing. Go in to the hidden menu and do a factory reset, OR when you boot up in fastboot mode to burn the image do a “fastboot –w”
-
You need to manually add the APN before data connectivity will work. To add the APN follow these instructions:
- Install the image (duh) ;)
- boot up, and go to the dialer
- enter 3845#*5200# to enter the hidden menu
- Click on Module Test
- Click on Stability Test
- Click on Enable Root
- Enter the password “eve&adam&&620love!”
- reboot the phone
- open a command prompt on your computer
- “adb shell am start -a android.settings.APN_SETTINGS”
- The APN config will open on the phone.
- Click “New APN”
- Enter the APN info. For Rogers, just set the name as “Rogers” and the APN as “internet.com” and leave everything else as default. Other carriers will have to look online to get their APN settings.
- That’s it. Data should now work. :)
Thanks to tolemaC for his excellent work on the tolesetup utility, which I’ve blatantly ripped from his most excellent 1.5 image.
Thanks to everyone that has hit that little donate button too, and to everyone who’s sent encouraging words and suggestions. :)

Is that a familiar problem or is it just me?
Is there anything I can do about it? I am thinking of installing the 2.1 firmware unless this problem is fixable.

Submitted by Pykler (not verified) on Tue, 08/17/2010 - 08:04.The 1.6 image is great, I love it! I love my phone now except for two things,
1. On Rogers, I guess they signed me up to get named caller id for people not in my contact list, I get weird latin characters namely "oàværñoÜZ" instead of a name or Unknown even.
2. Sending SMS in arabic or even arabic and english mixed arrives in weird latin carachters (the entire message, even the english parts are busted) at the recepient side (I haven't tried sending arabic sms with my stock 10c or even the 10f 1.5 images, I might try when I get a chance and report back)
Anybody else getting these, or knows anything about them?

I have been running your 1.5 image for a while, but I have been having some problems. I decided to try the 1.6 but unfortunatly I have kernel panics now. I tried both 'V10T' and 'Eve16v2', both won't work.
Do you know what I might have done wrong? Could it be related to my fastboot version?
P.s. : I think you're on mac too - Do you get OSX kernel panics when you run fastboot? For some reason, OSX craches when it's been running for a while and I try to run fastboot... !

Submitted by Aimevous on Sun, 08/01/2010 - 00:20.Hi Zac,
I've just flashed the 1.6 rom and I had done a fastboot -w before the flash as well as another factory reset after the flash (just to be sure).
I've enabled root permissions but somehow I can't abd.
In Ubuntu 10.04, when I tried to sudo adb devices, I get nothing.
Can you kindly advise?
Thanks!

Thanks in advance.

Submitted by Argon0 on Fri, 07/30/2010 - 01:39.Nice work Zac. I've got the 1.6 ROM installed now, running like a dream, albeit a dream without GPS.
Definitely faster than 1.5, and autosyncing e-mail works!
Just a shame that Navigate doesn't seem to work atm.. Will check again when out in the car...
[EDIT] GPS works fine - takes a while to "lock-on" but does work - not as long as my "Foehn & Hirsch" SatNave though!

Submitted by Britbloke (not verified) on Sat, 06/19/2010 - 06:47.Hey Zac, I just installed your 1.6 image on my Rogers Eve.
Fastboot worked fine, both boot and system.img's installed OK.
However, when I switch on for the first time, Android doesn't boot. I see the HHGTTG "Dont Panic" pic, then the Android animated logo, and then the screen goes black. The phone is still on as I can see the LCD light on the screen edges.
Any idea on what's going on?
Submitted by Zacpod on Sat, 06/19/2010 - 12:05.Yep. You need to do a factory reset, or wipe userdata+cache before installing any 1.6 image or the phone won't boot.
Boot in to fastboot mode, then do a "fastboot -w" to erase userdata and cache and then see if it boots. If it doesn't you need to read the restore docs (under docs above) and follow the restore prep section to erase userdata and cache. Then "fastboot flash system system.img" again and it should boot up fine.
Submitted by britbloke (not verified) on Sat, 06/19/2010 - 20:55.Thanks Zac, fastboot -w worked great and it's now booting normally. Got to say it's a lot smoother than 1.6. Good job!
Only thing left to do now is work out how to put APN's in cos I didn't make a note of the settings... oh well, it's the wife's phone!
Submitted by boyxez (not verified) on Sat, 06/12/2010 - 11:49.How to move preinstall app to sdcard
I run your gorgeus rom for my eve, mostly I like some preinstall app,but its cost much. I wondering if I can move the app into my sdcard like app2sd has do,can i?
Zac, can we move the app into sdcard?if we can, how to do it?
Thx a lot zac.
Submitted by Zacpod on Sat, 06/12/2010 - 12:05.Because the apps are preinstalled on the /system partition they don't take any usable space. However, if you want to remove them you'll have to do an "adb shell" and delete the app from /system/app. You can then install the app from the Market and move it to SD with toleSetup.
Submitted by Ciprivs (not verified) on Fri, 06/11/2010 - 00:47.hello, is there any way to configure sms to send 150 or 160 characters. I've installed the rom but when i write more than 80 characters it automatically convert the SMS to MMS. I've tried deleting mms.apk from the rom and installing handcent sms but this program split the sms in two. Is better but it sends two sms.
I hope you can help me and sorry for my english.
Submitted by Zacpod on Fri, 06/11/2010 - 12:22.Not that I know of. It's one of the broken things on the Korean firmware. For proper SMS handling you'll have to wait till LG releases the "European" GW620 firmware. :(
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 08/26/2010 - 08:33.Try downloading and installing Handcent sms. That worked fine for me!

Submitted by Zac (not verified) on Sat, 06/05/2010 - 18:23.Try doing a "adb shell" then "rm /data/dalvik-cache/*" and rebooting. You may still be using the cached copy of xim.apk.
Submitted by zer (not verified) on Sat, 06/05/2010 - 17:47.thanks for your answer! i've downloaded unyaffs, and extract my nandroid backup to get the XIM.apk. I've pushed it into /system/app ->reboot.

Submitted by gundal (not verified) on Sat, 06/05/2010 - 15:59.just installed this rom... Took a really long time in the android loading screen.. now its just a blank screen with "^@" in the top left corner... when I try to reflash it says waiting for device...
Submitted by Zac (not verified) on Sat, 06/05/2010 - 10:28.I'm glad you like it! Thanks!
To get the qwertz keyboard back you have to extract the xim.apk file from the stock image with "adb pull /system/app/xim.apk" (or find it on the internet somewhere) and install it on your phone with "adb push xim,apk /system/app" and then reboot. If you have a nandroid backup of your phone you can also extract it from the system.img using "unyaffs system.img"
I've seen the azerty xim.apk floating around the net, but I've never seen a qwertz version. Google may help you find one though. :)

Submitted by Zac (not verified) on Fri, 06/04/2010 - 12:04.I think the problem is due to it being a Korean image. There will be problems until a 'Western' image is released - once that happens I'll make a new firmware and SMS should work well. From what I've read, the ETA is early August.
Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 06/06/2010 - 22:44.I do like your ROM... nice n more fast than the old one. I'll wait your new release (western image). Thx before.

[dosbox]

Submitted by Zac (not verified) on Fri, 06/04/2010 - 03:53.For dosbox to work you need to put a dosbox.conf file in /sdcard.
Not sure what's up with yxflash - it doesn't work for me either. :(
